She woke up the next morning after a fitful night of sleep. She had checked her bank account before going too bed last night from her smart phone, and couldn’t sleep after that. She was down to a few measly dollars in her checking account. She watched the mail man put something in her mail box today. It most certainly had to be a bill. It was always a bill. Just because Lucy was new in town, and didn’t have a job…yet, didn’t mean those bills would stop coming. She got dressed quickly in one of her nicest outfits, and arranged her hair into a neat bun. She hoped she looked proffesional enough.
She breathed a sigh of pure relief as she scored a new job on her first attempt. She got an entry level position as a nurses aide. Caring for the sick and elderly was something she had done in the past, and she loved it. Made her feel like she was helping out in the world doing something important. It was only part time, but it could lead to a better more higher paying permanant possition in the future. As she had bills that weren’t going to pay themselves, she happily accepted! Once outside the hospital she let out the breath she was holding, and resisted the urge to fist bump others as they hurried by.
When she got home the first thing she did was call Presley over to tell him the good news…
“I got a job!” she squealed, giving him a friendly hug. She pulled back when the hug lasted a little longer then it should. She was getting that vibe from him again. She could see it in his eyes that he had a little crush on Lucy, how was she going to tell him that she just didn’t see him that way, and most importantly, would it end there friendship?
“We should go out and celebrate” Presley suggested. “I know this beauiful place on the river that you’ll love.” He smiled at her with hope in his eyes.
Lucy began to panic thinking of a way to turn him down without breaking his heart. She let out a fake yawn. coward she said to herself. “Thanks Press, but all this excitment wore me out, I think I just wanna hang inside tonight and chill. I start work tommorrow and I just wanna watch some tv and get to sleep. Thanks though…” Her voice trailed off.
“Of course, some other time then.” Presley smiled, to which Lucy just nodded.
After fixing something to eat for the two of them, she kept the conversation light, and steered away from any topics that could be push the conversation into romantic territory.
“So how was work today?” She asked between bites of food.
“Soul sucking and dreadful.” He said laughing. “Most days I like my job, but stitting in a cubical all day can drive you a little mad sometimes..” He then launched into an entertaining story about his boss and the fax machine.
She put a stupid comedy on the tv after dinner and hoped that would be enough to distract Presley from trying anything with Lucy. He would never be pushy, she wasn’t worried about that. She worried about his natural honesty and his directness. She made a big show of yawning and stretching, and they said there goodbyes.
As the dawn broke the following morning a blanket of fog covered the island. A slight chill was in the air reminding Lucy that Summer wasn’t going to be here forever. To her, fog seemed like a bad omen on her first day on the job. Tonight was also the night of the full moon.
Right from the get go after waking up things started going wrong. The toilet broke, sending water all over the linolem, and she didn’t have the money to call a plumber. Presley was a handy sim, but lord help her if she asked him for help, she didn’t want him to think she needed him, or be in debt to him in any way.
The fog gave way to rain. The sky seemed to open up with a loud crack of lightning, and rain started pouring down. She could hear the rain pounding on her cheap roof, and hoped she didn’t have any leaks.
As she didn’t have to work till later that night so she curled up on the couch with her sad thoughts and took a nap. When she awoke, she found the sun was starting to shine, as if the sun had burned off the fog.
The dampness was in the air as she made her way to work. She was excited, yet anxious as one always is while starting a new job. Worries of cruel bosses and lazy co-workers plagued her thoughts as she took her clunker of a car to the hospital downtown. The sky was a beautiful shade of orange and red. The night could still turn out ok.
Her first day went alright. Her boss was tough but fair, her co-workers were nice, and the night seemed to flow well. Everyone seemed to be team players and helped each other through out the night. But as she stepped out the front doors she was reminded that it was a full moon night. The greenish glow from the moon cast everything it touched in a sickly greenish light. It made Lucy anxious to get home fast. Everyone knows bad things happened on the full moon nights…
She got home, and locked the doors. She swore she heard a Zombie lurking in the bushes. Maybe it was her imagination. She called Presley, too make sure he was inside, and said that she would him tomorrow.
Feeling still a little bit on edge she hurried into her pajamas and jumped in bed and went to sleep.
