This chapter is rated PG. Disclaimer. Although I may be a nurse in real life, I’m not a medical doctor, I did my best to stay true to the facts, but obviously this is a game and I can only do so much with it. So yeah…go easy on me. LOL.
Anyways…yay for not making you all wait weeks for another chapter like last time…>.< Now that the heat wave has passed I’m in the mood to play, and I’m on a roll. I used a lot of poses this chapter as well, and im going to spend some time organizing my credits page, so if you see a pose you like, you will be able to find the link in there. 🙂 I hope you enjoy this chapter. 🙂
I smiled as I walked up the steps to the front door, eager to see my wife after a long day of installing computer software at Garrett’s Bank branch.
My wife, it felt weird to think those words, but it brought a smile to my face. I couldn’t wait to feel her arms around me, and tell her all about my day.
I loved how she would listen with rapt attention no matter how boring the subject matter must be to her, she always made me feel like I was the center of her universe, and it made me love her even more!
“Lucy, I’m hooooommme.” I said in my best Ricky Ricardo impression. Usually when I did that she laughed, She must be out, I thought.
I heard a thump from upstairs and my eyes went to the ceiling.
“Isabella?” I called loudly. “Are you home?”
I climbed up the stairs my ears on alert. “Bella? You home hun?”
Nothing. The bedroom was empty. I laughed to myself, I must be a little paranoid. I reached into the pocket of my jeans and grabbed my phone and selected Isabella’s number from the menu.
Her phone rang, from inside the bathroom…
“Isabella, are you in there?” I gave a short knock on the door. Nothing. I opened the door.
My wife lay with her head on the toilet, pale as the porcelain, a fine sheen of sweat beaded her brow.
“Isabella!” I yelled stooping to shake her. She was breathing, but her skin was burning hot.
I picked her up and carried her to the bed, tears running down my face.
“Cole,” she murmured feverishly against my neck, “Stomach hurts so bad.” Then she was out again.
“Bella, wake up, oh don’t do this to me.” I begged my eyes looking up to the ceiling, speaking to god, to anyone who was out there!
With Isabella in my arms I took her down the stairs and loaded her into my car. I never drove so fast in my life, I didn’t care if a cop attempted to pull me over, I wasn’t going to stop this car until I reached the Emergency room.
“Bella talk to me…” I begged the entire way to the hospital. “Where does your stomach hurt baby?”
Isabella opened her eyes, moaned once in pain, and then was quiet again. Tears streamed down my face like rain on my car windshield.
“Hang on Bella, we are almost here, just a couple of steps further.” I held on to her carefully as we walked into the hospital. “Just a little bit more.”
“We need help!” I yelled the minute we entered the lobby. To my relief the first face I saw was Uncle Aaron’s.
“Cole, what’s a matter?” He asked “Nurse, grab a gurney please!”
I followed the nurse and Isabella to the exam room, my stomach tied in knots. I tried sitting, and pacing, nothing calmed me down, and wouldn’t until I knew that my wife was ok!
She looked peaceful as she lay on the hospital cot. At least she wasn’t in pain when she was sleeping, I didn’t know if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Lucky I didn’t have to wait long, as Uncle Aaron entered.
He did his examination quickly, pressing on her stomach, and drawing some blood. I couldn’t watch. I wasn’t squeamish, watching the blood leave her body made the situation all to real to me!
“Cole, is it possible that your wife could be pregnant?” He asked. “Huh?” I asked stunned. That thought never occurred to me. Sure, we weren’t exactly trying, but we weren’t not trying either. “I guess, its possible.” I admitted my hands twisting my thick dark hair anxiously.
“I’m going to go check on those results.” Uncle Aaron patted my shoulder gently and left the room.
He was back a minute later. “We got those results, we need to get your wife up to surgery right away. Her appendix has ruptured. Please come with me, and the nurse will prep her for emergency surgery.”
I followed Uncle Aaron out into the hall, my legs wobbly and weak. I felt like I was going to pass out.
“That’s not all Cole.” Uncle Aaron said gently. “You can sit down if you need too.”
My stomach dropped to my feet. “I’ll stand.” I said stiffly, my body feeling cold from shock. What else could there be?
“Your wife is pregnant, a little over a month along. I take it this is a shock?”
Shocked didn’t begin to describe how I was feeling. Floored, flabbergasted, bewildered, and dumbfounded more like it. A bunch of other Synonyms came to mind. Pregnant. Wow….
As excited as I was over this news, my first concern was Isabella.
“This surgery is fairly routine.” Uncle Aaron said. “We will take every precaution so we don’t harm the fetus.”
“Will the baby live?” I asked feeling sick to my stomach, I wanted to sink to the floor and scream.
“I wont lie to you Cole, as routine as this surgery is, her pregnancy does increase the risk of complications.” He smiled gently again. “As soon as the surgery is finished, I’ll update you on her condition.”
I watched the nurse wheel the gurney with my wife into the hall, and then disappear into another hallway, that I couldn’t follow. I felt hopeless standing there, wishing there was something I could do. I stared the sign that said “No admittance” I paced, that was all I could do. Nothing to do but wait…and pray.
I paced, until the receptionist at the front desk gave me a dirty look, so I sat. And waited.
“Cole?” A voice said beside me shocking me out of my day dreams. I looked up to see Uncle Aaron standing over me a concerned smile on his face.
“The surgery was a success.” Uncle Aaron said, I started to stand a wide grin spread across my face. “But,” he continued. I sat back down feeling like I was going to faint.
“The baby?” I felt tears prick behind my lids.
“The baby is fine, the heartbeat is strong, but Isabella’s pregnancy isn’t going to be an easy one.” His face looked concerned and his eyes stared into mine directly. “To be honest, I’m shocked that she was able to get pregnant at all. This could possibly be her only pregnancy, and when she is released from this hospital, she is to be on strict bed rest, and will be needed to be monitored closely.” He paused. “Do you understand?”
I nodded, relieved that baby was ok, but sad over the news that this would be her only pregnancy. Isabella had always talked about having a whole mess of kids. My heart broke. How would I break the news to her?
I took the elevator up to her private room, and sat in the chair at her bedside and watched her sleep. I kissed her forehead. Her skin no longer felt like it was on fire, and her face was relaxed and peaceful.
I started to cry. Something I hated doing, and I was glad nobody was around to see me. Crying was for the weak, and I had to be strong, for her, and for myself. Finding out her womb was not suitable to carry children would break her heart.
I watched as her chest rose and fell. I watched the heart monitor beep steadily. I felt my eyes start to close….
I woke up an hour later, Isabella was still asleep. I kissed her gently on the cheek “I’ll be right back baby.” I said, even though she couldn’t hear me.
I took the elevator back down to the main floor to raid the vending machine. I would not be leaving this hospital until Isabella left with me.
To my shock, the first face I saw was Cordelia’s standing there in the Lobby. “Cole!” She yelled running over to me. “My dad just called me! Is Isabella ok?” She threw her arms around me hugging me tightly.
“She’s alright. She had her appendix removed, but will need to be monitored to make sure there is no pre-op infection.” I said. “There is more. Isabella is pregnant.”
“Congrats!” Cordelia squealed hugging me again.
“So am I.” She laughed. “I’m knocked up also.” She laughed looking at Max with an adored expression.
I looked back and forth between Max and Cordelia. “Well I guess congratulations are in order.” I said hugging my cousin again, I truly was happy for them both.
“Congrats on knocking up my cousin.” I laughed. “I hope the baby looks like her.” I said joking.
“Well I hope your son or daughter gets his mothers looks also.” Max laughed. We went in for the man hug, first shaking hands and then pounding each others backs like a couple of cro-magnum men. We truly were one step away from dragging our knuckles on the ground, I thought.
“Well its good to know that we are fertile men aye? Nothing wrong with our swimmers that’s for sure!” Max winked at me, obviously proud of his sperm, and his ability to reproduce.
At that thought I felt the sadness hit once again, but I tried to keep my smile light. I didn’t want to ruin this happy moment and disclose Isabella’s pregnancy complications.
First I would need to tell Isabella, and hoped that it wouldn’t break her heart…
Finally Isabella was released from the hospital, with stern directions from Uncle Aaron to stay in bed and rest as much as possible for the duration of her pregnancy.
She took the news better than I thought, better than I took it in fact. She was sad at the thought of not having a whole mess of children running around, but as long as this one baby was born healthy, that’s all that mattered to her.
I tucked her in, glad to have her home, and watched her until she fell asleep.
I sat on the couch idly flipping through the channels on the TV. I couldn’t sleep. I had so much on my mind. I was about to be a father. I looked around the house, I had inherited from my grandmother. She had fixed it up some before her death, but there was still so much more that needed to be done before the baby was born.
I felt like I had aged a year since the news of the impending baby. I was excited, and nervous, and well if I was going to admit it, scared to death. Would I be a good dad? I didn’t exactly have the best role model in the world to look up too. My dad was still in Prison. I hadn’t seen him since I was very little. Shane, my step father was more of a dad to me then my real dad, but I do admit having such crappy father figure in my life still hurt. I will be a much better father then Milo, I vowed narrowing my eyes. My son and daughter would be my world. I would see to it that they had everything they could want in life, and I would never abandon them…
